Was it a library or a secret passage? The Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana holds more stories than just those within its walls. This is the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana. It’s not just a repository of books. It’s a portal to the past.

Inaugurated on May 6, 1994, the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana stands proudly in San Ángel. It commemorates the LXXXIII anniversary of the start of the Mexican Revolution. Before this, it was simply known as the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana.

But there’s more to this building than meets the eye. The Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana resides in what’s known as “La Casa de los Dos Patios”. Or, as some call it, the Chucho el Roto House. Legend whispers of a hidden tunnel. It’s said to have connected to the Plaza de San Jacinto and other homes. Some even say the Dominicans built it as part of the El Carmen Monastery.

Imagine Jesús Arriaga, the famous bandit Chucho el Roto, using this tunnel. He was also known as the “torn Jesus”. The tunnel would provide an escape from the authorities.

Originally, the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana started with 8,000 specialized volumes on the Mexican Revolution. Today, it boasts over 86,000 items. These include books, pamphlets, and periodicals. The Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana is expanding. It now includes materials on Mexico’s Independence, liberal reforms, and constitutional history. They focus especially on the Constitution of 1917.

Inside the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana, you’ll find reading rooms and computers. A glass-domed patio hosts academic events. There are exhibitions, courses, forums, and workshops for all ages. These events cover various topics related to Mexico’s revolutions.

The Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana is more than just a library. It is also home to the Instituto Nacional de Estudios Históricos de las Revoluciones de México. The INEHRM preserves historical documents and graphic materials related to the Mexican Revolution. The Institute promotes research and knowledge. It focuses on the great transformations that have defined Mexico. These include the Independence movement and the Liberal Reforms.

Before you leave the Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana, remember its dual nature. It is a center of knowledge. It is also a place of hidden passages and whispered legends. The Biblioteca de la Revolución Mexicana is a reminder that history is always unfolding.
