Nestled in the heart of Sandringham, Auckland, stands the Bharatiya Mandir. A beacon of vibrant spirituality, the Bharatiya Mandir is New Zealand’s oldest purpose-built Hindu temple. It officially opened its doors in June 1993. The story of the Bharatiya Mandir begins in 1986. A group of Hindu New Zealanders, led by Roshanlal Nauhria, envisioned a dedicated space for their growing community. This vision was fueled by a desire to preserve their cultural heritage. They also wanted to provide a spiritual haven for future generations. The temple’s foundation stone was laid in 1991, after a land purification ceremony. A time capsule was placed within its foundations, a testament to the hopes and dreams of the community. The first trustees embarked on a journey to India. They studied traditional temple architecture and selected the Murti and other sacred objects for the Bharatiya Mandir. The Bharatiya Mandir serves as more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub. It hosts a wide range of activities, from youth groups and educational classes to music, yoga, and traditional dance. The temple celebrates a multitude of festivals. These include Diwali, Holi, and many others, creating a vibrant tapestry of cultural expression. In 2016, the Bharatiya Mandir expanded its reach by acquiring the neighboring Balmoral Community Centre. This further solidified its role as a central gathering place for the community. In 2023, the Bharatiya Mandir celebrated its 30th anniversary, a milestone that reflects its enduring presence and importance to the Hindu community in Auckland. The Bharatiya Mandir stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders. It is a place where tradition meets modernity. It also serves as a vibrant center for the Hindu community in Auckland.
