Have you ever heard of Bhaktivedanta Manor? It is a place where history and spirituality collide. This stunning mock-Tudor mansion, nestled in the heart of the Hertfordshire countryside, stands as a testament to a fascinating story. Once a nurses’ training college, it was transformed in 1973 into a Hindu temple by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, better known as the Hare Krishna movement. The benefactor of this transformation? None other than George Harrison, the former Beatle! He donated the manor to the Hare Krishna movement, recognizing its potential to be a sanctuary for spiritual seekers. Initially, just a 17-acre property, Bhaktivedanta Manor expanded over the years, becoming the ISKON movement’s largest property in the United Kingdom, and one of the most visited Radha Krishna temples in Europe. It’s said that when Harrison presented the manor to the movement, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, expressed his gratitude with these memorable words: “You have given us this shelter, and Krishna will give you shelter – at his lotus feet.” And within these very walls, amidst the beautiful gardens and the sprawling grounds, a true spiritual haven was born. Today, it serves as a vibrant hub for devotees and visitors alike.
