Perhaps the walls of the Beyceğiz Camii could whisper stories of centuries past. The Beyceğiz Camii stands here in Istanbul’s Fatih district. It is located in the Atik Ali neighborhood. According to the information plaque and foundation records, Kasım Çelebiyyü’ş- Şehri bi-İbn-i Beğcügez built it. That was in 1473.

But wait a moment. Some sources suggest Mehmed Bey was the founder. It is more likely that Mehmed Bey was a second founder. The foundation allocated 2773 akçe from a property in Mimar Sinan Neighborhood. From this income, the Imam received 3 akçe. The muezzin and female teacher received 1.5 akçe. The cüzhan received 2.5 akçe. The trustee received 3 akçe. The caretaker received 1 akçe. The Ereğli lodge received 1 akçe.

The Beyceğiz Camii has undergone several repairs and renovations. Sadly, nothing remains of the original Fatih era structure. It had stone walls and a wooden roof. After various repairs and expansions, it was completely rebuilt in 1994.

So, as we stand before the Beyceğiz Camii, remember its long history. Think of Kasım Çelebiyyü’ş- Şehri bi-İbn-i Beğcügez and perhaps Mehmed Bey. Consider the people who prayed here. Contemplate the restorations that have shaped its form over the centuries. This mosque continues to serve the community. It is a testament to faith and history in the heart of Istanbul.
