Atop the Beyazıt Tower two firefighters stand watch. They are the silent guardians of Istanbul’s past. The Beyazıt Tower stands tall a testament to centuries of history. It has witnessed fires riots and the rise and fall of empires.

The Beyazıt Tower’s story began not with stone but with wood. In 1749 a simple wooden tower was erected. It served as a fire watchtower a crucial role in a city prone to devastating blazes. Sadly this first tower met its end in the Great Fire of Cibali in 1756. A replacement wooden tower was constructed. This too was destroyed in 1826 during riots following the dissolution of the Janissary Corps. Another wooden tower followed quickly built by the talented Krikor Balyan. Ironically this one too suffered the same fiery fate at the hands of Janissary supporters.

Finally in 1828 the current stone Beyazıt Tower rose. Senekerim Balyan brother of Krikor designed this magnificent structure. It was built in the Ottoman Baroque style a masterpiece of resilience and architectural skill. The original tower featured a single floor. It offered a breathtaking view across the sprawling city. Reaching the top required climbing 180 wooden steps. From this vantage point fire watchers could spot dangers from afar.

In 1849 three more octagonal floors were added. Each floor served a specific purpose. One was for signaling another for signal baskets and the last for flags. This design improvement enhanced the tower’s effectiveness in responding to fire emergencies. An iron pole 13 meters tall was added in 1889. The tower was partly damaged during the earthquake of 1889 and underwent restoration. Today the wooden staircase boasts 256 steps.

The Beyazıt Tower’s importance extended far beyond fire prevention. Its strategic position provided an unparalleled view. The entire Old City the Golden Horn the Bosphorus the Sea of Marmara and even the Princes’ Islands were within sight. During the day fire was signaled with baskets. At night colored lamps flashed warnings. The number and color of baskets or lamps indicated the fire’s location. The Icadiye Fire Tower on the Anatolian side would then fire seven volleys to alert citizens. Twenty firefighters were stationed in the Beyazıt Tower until 1923.

While advanced communication technology reduced its fire prevention role the Beyazıt Tower remains a symbol of Istanbul. It still signals weather forecasts and navigation information at night. Two firefighters now guard it around the clock. Since 1972 special permission is needed to enter this historic landmark. The Beyazıt Tower stands as a sentinel a silent witness to the city’s vibrant past. Its story is etched in its stones a captivating tale of resilience and innovation. It is truly one of Istanbul’s most remarkable structures.
