“Sultan II. Bayezid built it.” Does that sound familiar? The Beyazid-i Cedid Camii. also known as Sultan II. Bayezid Camii, stands before us. It is located on Necati Bey Caddesi in Tophane. Find it on the right as you walk from Karaköy towards Tophane. It is before the Kılıç Ali Paşa Camii.

The Beyazid-i Cedid Camii has seen many repairs. Its original appearance has changed significantly. The fountain to the right of the entrance was added later. The inscription on the fountain reads. “Pass and drink from the pure water. It is healing for the eyes. The fountain’s founder is Saraylı Şekerpare.”

The inscription above the door tells of a repair after a great fire in Galata. It reads. “The Beyazid Camii was destroyed by a fierce fire. Many owners of good intentions rebuilt it with effort.”

The Beyazid-i Cedid Camii features a square plan. It has stone walls and a wooden ceiling. Twenty windows illuminate its interior. Its squat minaret lacks any distinctive features. Kızlarağası Beşir Ağa added the minbar. So the mimbar is from Beşir Ağa.

This mosque offers a glimpse into Istanbul’s history. It links the reigns of Sultan II. Bayezid and later benefactors. The Beyazid-i Cedid Camii continues to serve as a place of worship. It reminds us of the city’s enduring spirit of renewal. This is a place where faith and history intertwine. A simple yet significant landmark in Istanbul.
