Question: What silent stories does this stone cross tell? This is the Bexley War Memorial. It stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by the people of Bexley. They gave their lives in the Great Wars.

The Bexley War Memorial commemorates the residents of Bexley. They were killed or went missing in World War I and World War II. There are 65 names from World War I. 32 names are listed from World War II.

Many war memorials were erected after the First World War. After the Second World War, names of those who died in that war were added. This ensured their sacrifice would not be forgotten.

The Bexley War Memorial stands at the junction of Hurst Road and Parkhill Road. The memorial was unveiled on 14 November 1920. Brigadier General Phipps Hornby VC, CB, CMG attended. Local clergy and dignitaries also participated in the dedication.

The memorial features a two-stepped octagonal base. It is surmounted by a plinth and cross. An inscription is carved on the sides of the plinth. A bronze sword is placed on the front face of the cross.

The front face bears the inscription: “IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE BEXLEY MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WARS 1914-1918 LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND WE FOR ENGLAND DIED”. Other faces list names.

The memorial’s height measures 7380mm. It is constructed from Portland stone. The detail is made of bronze.

The site on which the Bexley War Memorial stands has an interesting history. It was bought from Christ Church College, Oxford. The land had been part of the Manor of Bexley. William Camden owned this manor from 1551 to 1623. He bequeathed the manor site to Christ Church College upon his death.

In 1991, a tender was put out for the renovation of the Bexley War Memorial. The work consisted of cleaning and recutting the inscription.

The Bexley Council maintains responsibility for this memorial. The memorial serves as a place for reflection. It helps remember the cost of war. It honors those who served. The Bexley War Memorial ensures their stories live on.
