Founded in 1870 Bethlehem Baptist Church stands before you. Its story begins not in a grand edifice but in the humble homes of formerly enslaved people. These brave individuals along with members of the Moody family worshipped together. They were seeking solace and community. They found strength in their shared faith.

Imagine the early years. Services were held in brush arbors. Later a permanent structure was built on East Broad Street. The congregation persevered. They moved to McClendon Park West before finding their present location. This is at 1188 W. Broad Street. The building you see today incorporates bricks from the old Colored School in Mansfield. These bricks silently whisper tales of resilience and education.

Pastor Michael A Evans who joined in 1989 has served as pastor since 1991. He arrived to find around 75 members. Now Bethlehem Baptist Church boasts over 2500. The church thrived even during the pandemic. They used online streaming to connect with their members. Pastor Evans speaks of Mansfield’s unique spirit. He says people feel at home here.

The church is still growing. Beyond the T M Moody Gymnatorium where services are held there’s Pioneer Place senior housing. Bethlehem Baptist Church is committed to community development. They hope to build a new sanctuary continuing their legacy of service and faith.

Their history reflects a journey of faith and perseverance. It highlights the unwavering hope of a community. The church demonstrates the impact of their spiritual belief. It’s a testament to their enduring strength. This is more than a church it’s a living monument to the power of faith and community.
