Founded in 1870 Bethlehem Baptist Church stands before you. Its story begins not in a grand edifice but in the humble homes of formerly enslaved people. They moved to McClendon Park West before finding their present location. This is at 1188 W. Broad Street. The building you see today incorporates bricks from the old Colored School in Mansfield. Pastor Michael A Evans who joined in 1989 has served as pastor since 1991. He arrived to find around 75 members. Now Bethlehem Baptist Church boasts over 2500. The church thrived even during the pandemic. They used online streaming to connect with their members. Pastor Evans speaks of Mansfield’s unique spirit. He says people feel at home here.
The church is still growing. Beyond the T M Moody Gymnatorium where services are held there’s Pioneer Place senior housing. Bethlehem Baptist Church is committed to community development. They hope to build a new sanctuary continuing their legacy of service and faith.
