Bethesda Lutheran Church

In 1951, a burgeoning community in Mountlake Terrace yearned for spiritual guidance. Homes buzzed with Bible studies, but a dedicated space for worship was lacking. Enter the Lutheran Free Church, sending a missionary to explore the possibility of establishing a church in Mountlake Terrace. A generous developer donated two plots of land on 56th Avenue West. Construction of Bethesda Lutheran Church began. On Christmas Day, 1951, within the still-unfinished, yet inspiringly tall structure, 37 worshippers celebrated their first service. They named their new church Bethesda, meaning “house of mercy.” Bethesda Lutheran Church was officially organized on March 1, 1953. Bethesda Lutheran Church has been deeply woven into the fabric of Mountlake Terrace ever since. The church actively participates in local events, like the Tour de Terrace, where members offer free hugs. During the Tour de Terrace, Bethesda Lutheran Church also hosts the annual Bethesda Arts & Crafts Festival, showcasing recycled art. The Mountlake Terrace Seniors Group meets at Bethesda Lutheran Church twice a week for lunch. Every Monday night, the church welcomes everyone to free community dinners. Bethesda Lutheran Church continues its tradition of service and community, a testament to the generosity and vision of those early worshippers who sought a house of mercy in a growing town.
