Bethesda Gyermekkórház

Did you know that this very building the Bethesda Gyermekkórház has a history stretching back over 150 years? It’s one of Budapest’s oldest children’s hospitals and uniquely in Central-Eastern Europe it’s maintained by the Church. The Bethesda Gyermekkórház wasn’t always here on Bethesda utca. It started much smaller in a house on Rózsa utca. Imagine that first Christmas in 1865. The building was transformed into a hospital with six beds. The hospital opened officially on January 1 1866. It was a remarkable feat of faith and dedication. The Reformed Church’s faithful members donated money and supplies. They even sent someone abroad to raise additional funds. Dr Bakody Tivadar a dedicated physician offered free care for the poorer members of the German-speaking community. A generous donation from a Scottish woman whom Dr Bakody treated helped significantly. But acquiring the funding wasn’t the only challenge. The hospital needed staff. Deaconesses from Kaiserswerth Germany were recruited to provide expert care. This small hospital quickly gained a reputation. During the Austro-Prussian War it even accepted wounded soldiers. The pastor Rudolf König organized a collection in the church to help them. Sadly the hospital’s location on Rózsa utca proved inconvenient. The construction of Andrássy út forced the sale of the building. The move to the Bartl villa near City Park in 1872 was a significant step forward. The patients loved the new location and its surroundings despite some initial difficulties with access. A citywide exhibition in 1885 decreased the noise level significantly. A new urban railway made the Bethesda Gyermekkórház much more accessible. The Bartl villa was expanded a few years later. New wings were added for the deaconesses and other facilities. The building which houses the Bethesda Gyermekkórház today on Bethesda utca came in 1890. The building is considered a protected architectural heritage of Zugló. Through wars nationalisation and periods of struggle the Bethesda Gyermekkórház persevered. It continues to serve children providing top-tier pediatric care. Today the hospital boasts a wide range of departments including a national center for treating children with burns. The hospital has a strong international network too.
