A glorious past a vibrant present a promising future. That’s the motto of Bethel United Methodist Church. Right here in Chicago this church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Founded in 1834 its story begins not with a grand building but a humble log cabin. This modest structure initially stood north of the Chicago River. Four years later it embarked on a unique journey. Imagine the sight of this log cabin being floated across the river then rolled on logs to its present location. The corner of Washington and Clark Streets became its permanent home. The Bethel United Methodist Church has never moved from that spot. This enduring presence underscores its deep roots in the city’s history.
The original log cabin was eventually replaced. A larger brick church with a towering 148-foot spire replaced it in 1845. This church served the congregation for years until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed it. Undeterred the congregation rebuilt. They chose to remain at “The Methodist Corner” a testament to their unwavering faith and commitment to their community.
The current magnificent structure stands as a symbol of this resilience. The present building a skyscraper completed in 1924 was once the tallest in Chicago. It is more than just a place of worship.
