“Can you believe this church has been here since the late 1800s?” Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church has indeed graced this neighborhood for well over a century. It all began in 1891 with Reverend Martin Fuelling, a true pioneer of faith. He saw the need for a spiritual home in this growing community. He started by holding services and even establishing a school. The congregation thrived under his guidance, and in 1894, Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church officially came into being. Their first house of worship was built in 1896, a testament to their growing community. But the congregation continued to expand. In 1910, they laid the cornerstone for a new, larger church, which was dedicated on May 14, 1911. Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church was more than just a place of worship. It was the heart of the community. The first Sunday School class was held in 1926, offering spiritual guidance to the younger generation. And in 1928, they celebrated the graduation of their very first eighth-grade class. Imagine the pride within those walls! The school building itself was dedicated that same year. Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church has seen its share of history. In 1946, a special service of Thanksgiving was held to honor the return of the brave men and women who served in World War II. Over 125 members of this very congregation had served their country, and sadly, four made the ultimate sacrifice. The church continued to evolve with the times, undergoing renovations in 1941 and again in 1958. The school building followed suit with its own renovation in 1963. Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church has adapted over the decades, but one thing remains constant: it is a beacon of faith, a testament to the enduring spirit of this community.
