Imagine fleeing slavery and finding refuge in a new city. That’s part of the story of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. It began as a mission church in Chicago.

Bishop William Paul Quinn founded it in June 1862. Quinn Chapel AME Church was overcrowded. So Bethel AME Church was created to help.

Bethel AME Church is Chicago’s second-oldest Black church. It has a long history of service. The church is located at 4440 South Michigan Avenue. However, it wasn’t always here.

From its start, Bethel AME Church moved locations 17 times. Despite these many moves, the church remained important. It played a key role in Chicago’s Black community.

Bethel AME Church helped refugees. It thrived despite fires and economic depressions. Black population shifts and urban unrest didn’t stop it. The church became a leading faith-based institution. It actively worked for civic and social justice. Bethel was an anchor in the Black Liberation Movement.

Ida B. Wells and Lou Palmer were members. The Wabash YMCA and Provident Hospital were founded here. Political education forums and voter drives started at Bethel. These efforts boosted the election of Mayor Harold Washington.

The church celebrated its 155th anniversary in 2017. The celebration included a banquet. It was held at the Garden Chalet Banquet Hall. Reverend Jennifer Tinsley was the pastor.

The event featured music and dance. There was also a silent auction. The auction raised money for Bethel’s outreach programs.

Every five years, Bethel AME Church hosts a banquet. It celebrates its legacy and service. The church helps the Chicago community and beyond.

Bethel AME Church also celebrated its 157th anniversary. There were three special events. A prayer breakfast honored those who served the church. A block party offered fun for all ages. The anniversary worship service featured Reverend Jennifer W. Tinsley.

Bethel Community Facility provides programs. These programs assist individuals and families. They offer emergency assistance with rent and utilities. The facility also has an emergency shelter. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Youth can participate in performing arts and film camps. There is also after-school tutoring. Job training is available for young people. Bethel Community Facility offers enrichment activities.

Bethel AME Church continues to serve. It strengthens the lives of people in the community. The church remembers its past. It looks forward to a positive future.
