Bethany Union Church is a Christian and a Community Church. It is open to all. Everyone is invited and welcome.
Bethany Church has a rich history. It is part of a larger story. In 1895, a group of German immigrants came together. They shared a common faith. They also shared a cultural background. These immigrants followed the Evangelical tradition.
The first meetings were held in a living room. This living room was near the church’s current location. Later, they met in a storefront on Irving Park. By 1920, they had broken ground at Paulina and Cullom.
In 1930, the sanctuary was ready for Christmas Worship. This followed the construction of the gymnasium and parsonage. In 1957, the Evangelical, Reform, and Congregational churches joined. Bethany Evangelical then became Bethany United Church of Christ.
The history of Bethany Union Church goes beyond its building. Plaques inside the sanctuary honor past members and pastors. These plaques adorn the wall and the pulpit. They remember those who are no longer with us. The congregation decorates the altar with roses on All Saints’ Sunday. This celebrates their memories and their legacy.
