Imagine this place back in 1894. The Bethania Cemetery Association was formed in April. Seven Chicago congregations joined together. They sought a final resting place for their community. These congregations were Cross and St Andrew. They also included St Martini and St Stephen. Bethlehem on 103rd Street was another. Finally, St Paul on 76th Street and St Mark completed the group.
The association purchased 114 acres of land under favorable terms. The land cost 200 dollars an acre. The location was on Archer Road and 70th Street near Summit, Illinois. Only five acres were planned as a cemetery initially. The remaining land was rented out.
Bethania Cemetery was consecrated on July 15, 1894. Pastor W Kohn presided over the ceremony. Just a week later, on July 22, 1894, the first funeral took place. A ten-day-old child named Ehrhart Ketschner was the first interment. Since then, 210 people have found their final resting place. 237 family gravesites have been purchased.
