Picture this. You’re standing before Beth Jacob Congregation a vibrant Conservative synagogue in Mendota Heights Minnesota. Its story begins not here but in 1869 in St Paul. A group of Eastern European Jewish merchants settled there. They formed Chevrah B’nai Ya’akov the Congregation of the Sons of Jacob.

This wasn’t the first Jewish community in St Paul. German Jews had already established Mount Zion. But the Yiddish-speaking Eastern Europeans preferred their own gathering. They built a beautiful brick building in 1888. It seated six hundred people. It even had a Hebrew School and a library.

Times changed. The congregation moved west. They changed their name to Sons of Jacob. They merged with another group Hebrew Seminary Congregation. They built a new facility in 1947. This new building included a social hall and a chapel.

By the late 1950s their Orthodox practices softened. Men and women sat together during services. The congregation continued to thrive. Then came the 1960s and 1970s. Many families moved. Membership declined. The Portland Avenue building was sold in 1982. The future of Sons of Jacob seemed uncertain.

Then something remarkable happened. A new congregation formed the New Conservative Congregation. They met at the St Paul JCC. They joined forces with Sons of Jacob. In 1985 a merger created Beth Jacob Congregation.

The combined congregation built this very building you see before you. It opened in 1988. Rabbi Morris Allen became their leader. He played a pivotal role in developing Magen Tzedek an ethical kosher certification process. This was a direct response to a scandal involving Agriprocessors in 2006.

Beth Jacob has thrived. It’s received numerous awards for its innovative social programs. The congregation remains a place of worship and community. It represents a unique blend of history tradition and modern values. Beth Jacob Congregation continues to build on the legacy of its predecessors. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Minnesota.
