Gazing across the serene expanse of Bessborough Reservoir, can you sense the echoes of a vanished estate? This tranquil body of water, nestled south of the River Thames in Surrey, holds more than just water. It holds the secrets of Apps Court, a grand mansion and estate that once graced this very spot. Bessborough Reservoir, opened in 1907, wasn’t always a reservoir. It began its life as the grounds of Apps Court, a manor house steeped in history. The last noble owner, John, Duke of Montagu, resided here until his death in 1749. After passing through various hands, the estate met its fate in 1898. The Southwark and Vauxhall Waterworks Company purchased Apps Court. They demolished the mansion and transformed the land into the reservoir we see today. Imagine the change, from manicured gardens and rolling fields to this expansive body of water. Bessborough Reservoir shares its space with the neighboring Knight Reservoir. Together they cover 125.5 acres and hold an impressive 1,198 million imperial gallons of water. Their construction was a significant feat of engineering, involving the excavation of 1.15 million cubic meters of earth and the use of 153,000 cubic meters of puddle clay to create the embankments. This clay core extends down to the London clay, ensuring the integrity of the reservoir walls. While Apps Court is gone, remnants of its past linger. A tradition survived the estate’s transformation. A barrel of ale and a quarter of corn made into bread were once distributed annually to the poor on All Souls’ Day. This customary tenure, tied to the land, persisted even after the reservoir’s creation. The water company initially resisted, but the Charity Commissioners intervened. They ensured that the equivalent value was distributed to the poor of Walton and Molesey, preserving a piece of Apps Court’s legacy. Bessborough Reservoir is more than just a reservoir. It’s a testament to London’s ever-growing need for water and a reminder of a bygone era. The next time you visit Bessborough Reservoir, take a moment to imagine the grand estate that once stood here. Consider the lives lived within its walls and the traditions that continue to echo across the water.
