Picture the majestic stone structure before you. This is Berwyn United Lutheran Church. Its cornerstone was laid in January 1950. But its story stretches far back. This wasn’t the first home of this congregation.
Long before this beautiful Gothic Revival building stood tall Berwyn United Lutheran Church had humble beginnings. It started in 1917. It was then known as Wartburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. Services were held in both German and English. The first church building was a simple frame structure. It was built by the men of the church. It stood at the corner of 24th Street and 62nd Court now Harvey Avenue.
A few years passed. The congregation outgrew its small home. A new church was built. In 1934 the name changed to Berwyn United Lutheran Church. The current building however has a fascinating story. Tradition says that during its construction the steeple’s height proved too much for the bricklayers. They were afraid to climb so high. So it was the pastor himself who carried the bricks up the ladder completing the tallest part of the structure. That dedication to faith is mirrored in the community the church serves.
Berwyn United Lutheran Church is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place of worship and fellowship. It’s a testament to faith. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community spirit. It is a cornerstone of the Berwyn community. It has served generations. The church continues to welcome all. It’s a place where everyone is welcome. Come and experience the warmth and spirit of this remarkable church.
