“A pastor, bootmaker and small town called Berwick.” This phrase encapsulates the humble beginnings of the Berwick Church of Christ. Here, in this very spot, a story of faith, community, and transformation began. It is a story that continues to unfold today.
The Berwick Church of Christ started with a simple act of kindness. In 1869, James Hamill, a pastor walked from Prahran to Pakenham. He was on his way to a small church group meeting. His boot gave him trouble. He stopped at the bootmaker’s shop in Berwick.
There, he met Reinholdt Metzenthin and his wife Elisabeth. Hamill shared his faith in Jesus with them. In June, Hamill returned to Berwick. He baptized Reinholdt and Elisabeth in the Cardinia Creek. This marked the start of the Berwick Church of Christ.
From those humble beginnings, the church has grown. It strives “to be a movement representing Jesus Christ.” Its mission is to transform lives and communities through the gospel’s power. The Berwick Church of Christ equips followers of Christ. They are encouraged to love people. They serve their city. They grow faith communities.
The Berwick Church of Christ values God. They honour Him through worship. Christ is central to everything they do. The Holy Spirit guides and empowers them. They believe the Bible is God’s inspired word. They focus on proclaiming the Gospel. They demonstrate God’s love to everyone.
This church is an independent congregation. They follow the teachings of the New Testament. They recognize no authority above their congregation except Christ. They have no creed other than the Bible.
The Berwick Church of Christ believes in God. He is the Creator composed of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They believe all men have broken God’s law. They are separated from God. God provided a way to deal with sin through Jesus’ sacrifice.
To be saved, a person must believe in God. They must obey the gospel. They must confess Christ. Then they begin a life of repentance and love. Salvation comes by God’s grace and faith. It is not earned by works.
The church practices a simple form of worship. They offer encouragement. They share meals. They welcome anyone seeking truth about God. They encourage all to follow Christ.
Currently, the Berwick Church of Christ is under the spiritual oversight of three elders. All members have a voice in financial and ministry decisions. Most monthly contributions go to benevolence and evangelistic efforts. These efforts are in the USA and around the world.
The Berwick Church of Christ offers services on Sundays at 10 am. It is a place where people can connect. They experience the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. It is open to all seeking spiritual growth.
So, as you stand here, consider the journey of faith. Think about the dedication of those who came before. The Berwick Church of Christ continues to be a beacon. It shines brightly in this community. It is a place where lives are transformed. The good news is shared with all who enter.
