What secrets lie beneath the silent stones? Here at the Montmartre Cemetery, we find the final resting place of Bernard-Marie Koltès. Bernard-Marie Koltès, a French playwright and theatre director, rests here after a life cut short by AIDS at the age of 41. Born in Metz, France in 1948, Koltès’s journey began far from the bustling stages of Paris.

Bernard-Marie Koltès found his calling in the theatre quite unexpectedly. Inspired by a performance of Medea, he embarked on a path that would lead him to become one of France’s most celebrated contemporary playwrights. Koltès’s early works, like “Bitternesses” and “The Walk,” were produced at the Théâtre du Quai in Strasbourg, a company he founded himself. His talent captured the attention of Hubert Gignoux, director of the National Theater of Strasbourg. Gignoux recognized Koltès’s genius and invited him to study at the theatre school.

Bernard-Marie Koltès’s work explored the profound themes of loneliness, death, and the struggle for human connection. His writing, influenced by absurdist writers and playwrights like Samuel Beckett, resonated with audiences who grappled with similar feelings of isolation. Koltès’s most renowned play, “In the Solitude of Cotton Fields,” premiered at the Avignon Festival in 1977, solidifying his place in French theatre. His plays are performed internationally, translated into over 36 languages. He collaborated with avant-garde director Patrice Chéreau, creating groundbreaking productions at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York and the Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre.

Bernard-Marie Koltès delved into challenging subjects. He wrote “Black Battles with Dogs,” inspired by his experiences witnessing the impact of European influences on African cultures. A visit to America sparked the creation of “Quay West,” a play centered around the experiences of a brother and sister navigating a foreign culture. Even the psychopathic killer Roberto Succo became a source of inspiration, leading to Koltès’s final play, “Roberto Zucco,” performed posthumously in Berlin in 1990. Here, at his tomb in Montmartre Cemetery, we reflect on the remarkable legacy of Bernard-Marie Koltès. His voice, though silenced, continues to resonate through his powerful and poignant plays.
