Here lies a story of transformation and community. Welcome to Bermondsey Spa Gardens. This park in Bermondsey is located on Grange Road SE1 3AH.
Once, this 4.5-acre space was just marshland. Imagine it transformed in the 1760s. Thomas Keyse opened Bermondsey Spa. An adjacent street is still named Keyse Road. The spa attracted visitors seeking healing. After Keyse’s gardens closed the area was built over.
Tragedy struck during World War Two. The area suffered heavy bombing. But from the ashes a park emerged. The Mayor of Bermondsey opened it in 1954.
But the story doesn’t end there. Bermondsey Spa Gardens was redeveloped in 2005. It reopened in March 2006 with new features. The £2 million project added lighting and signage. New bins and paths were installed. Plants and play equipment were added too.
The Ellen Brown Bermondsey Play Centre was also built. It is shared by a Sure Start centre and Southwark Play Services. A small café is part of it too.
The park has a running path and exercise equipment. It is bordered by several roads. Spa Road is to the north and Grange Road to the west. Alscot Road lies to the east and south. Keyse Road runs to the southwest.
Look north toward Spa Road. The former Bermondsey public library stands there. It’s a Grade II listed Victorian building from 1890. Recently restored it now houses the Kagyu Samye Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Centre.
Now glance at the corner of Spa Road and Alscot Road. You will see the former Bermondsey Town Hall.
Looking towards Grange Road the Art Deco Alaska fur factory is visible. Wallis Gilbert and Partners built it in 1932.
The playground of the Boucher Church of England Primary School marks a somber spot. It stands on the site of St Luke’s Bermondsey. This church was bombed in WW2. It was demolished in the 1960s.
