Picture this a humble stone structure clinging to the hillside. This is the Bergerie of Pierre Puget. It’s not much to look at now just a low vaulted room a remnant of a shepherd’s shelter. But this unassuming building whispers of a remarkable past a connection to one of France’s most celebrated artists.

Pierre Puget a renowned sculptor painter architect lived and worked in Marseille. He was hailed as the Michelangelo of France. His artistic genius shone brightly during the 17th century. This Bergerie was more than just a place to keep sheep. It was a small part of Puget’s own property. He owned the surrounding land and woods a secluded haven high on the slopes near the Grotte Rolland.

Documents from 1696 reveal that his son François sold timber from this area to fuel the watchtower on Marseilleveyre. These documents also detail that François inherited the Bergerie and woodland after his father’s death in 1694. The location is a small gorge at the foot of the mountain leading to Grotte Rolland.

Nearby you can even see the remains of a stone quarry. Many cut blocks of stone are still visible among the undergrowth. It is believed that this quarry provided material for the Bergerie’s construction. Puget’s last will and testament holds a fascinating detail. He requested that a plaque be placed at the Bergerie inscribed with the words “Propriété Puget” His legacy is powerful even if his Bergerie is in disrepair today.

Puget was known for his work in baroque art and architectural endeavors. He is considered a complete creator a master whose talents transcended the limitations of individual artistic disciplines.

The Bergerie a silent witness to a bygone era. A small part of the much larger story of Pierre Puget and his significant contribution to art and architecture. The building may be worn and neglected now but it remains a tangible link to the past a glimpse into the life and times of a true French master. It silently observes the changing times from its hilltop position. It continues to inspire wonder and intrigue for anyone that knows its story.
