Gazing up at the Benjamin Franklin Statue, one might think it’s a grand tribute. But its story is more quirky than you’d imagine. Here in Washington Square, the Benjamin Franklin Statue has stood watch over San Francisco since 1904. But its journey began decades earlier, in 1879. The statue wasn’t originally intended as a memorial to one of America’s Founding Fathers. It was a temperance fountain, the brainchild of Henry D. Cogswell. Cogswell, a dentist with a fervent belief in temperance, envisioned a fountain for every hundred bars. This proved impossible. This smaller-than-life bronze figure of Franklin stands atop an ornate granite base. Originally, spigots dispensed water into stone basins, a testament to Cogswell’s original vision. Though the spigots are long gone, the inscription “Welcome” still graces all four sides of the base, a greeting to “Our Boys and Girls, Who Will Soon Take Our Places and Pass On.” The base holds a secret: a time capsule. Sealed in 1879, it was opened a century later, revealing Cogswell’s personal papers. A new capsule was placed inside, destined to be opened in 2079. What messages will it hold for the future? The Benjamin Franklin Statue isn’t just a monument; it’s a quirky piece of San Francisco history. It’s a testament to a bygone era, a reminder of a passionate dentist’s dream. And it’s a silent observer of the ever-changing city that surrounds it.
