In 1880, a significant piece of land changed hands. This land, once home to the famed Whampoa Gardens, became the site of Bendemeer Secondary School. Bendemeer Secondary School first opened its doors in 1977, initially sharing space with Beng Wan Primary School. Just a few months later, it moved to its own building along Serangoon Road. The official opening ceremony took place on April 5, 1979, with Mr. Sidek Saniff, Member of Parliament for Kolam Ayer, presiding. Bendemeer Secondary School quickly grew, reaching a student population of 1800 by 1980. This made it one of Singapore’s largest secondary schools. It even housed a Pre-University center, offering commercial subjects to around 400 students from 1980 to 1995. The school’s journey took another turn in 1998. Bendemeer Secondary School merged with Whampoa Secondary School. A new building arose on the former site of Whampoa Secondary, at 1 St Wilfred Road. This marked a symbolic transition. During the June holidays, the entire school community walked from the old Serangoon Road location to the new St Wilfred Road campus. Each person carried plaques bearing the school’s vision, mission, values, and code. The official opening at St Wilfred Road took place on September 9, 1999. Dr. Lee Boon Yang, Minister for Manpower, officiated the ceremony. Bendemeer Secondary School continued to evolve. In 2010, construction began on an indoor sports hall, which opened the following year. The school field was upgraded with synthetic turf in July 2011, enhancing the sporting environment. Today, Bendemeer Secondary School upholds its commitment to building character, nurturing learners, and serving the community. New students are introduced to the school’s rich history through a tour of the heritage gallery. This helps them understand the legacy they are now a part of. Bendemeer Secondary School’s story is one of growth, adaptation, and a dedication to education.
