In 1848, a hero returned to Denmark. Peter von Scholten, the former governor-general of the Danish West Indies, arrived at his newly acquired country house, Belvedere. He had just emancipated slavery in the islands. Belvedere, located in Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen, became his sanctuary. The elegant neoclassical house, completed in 1842, offered respite after his years of service. Tragically, his wife Lise died shortly after his return. A few years later, von Scholten moved to Altona to live with his daughter and son-in-law. He passed away there in 1854. Belvedere continued its story, passing through different hands. In 1870, financier Isaac Wulff Heyman owned Belvedere. He commissioned architect Henrik Steffens Sibbern to renovate the building. Much later, in 1989, Hans Jorgen Linde, founder of Ilva, bought Belvedere. He oversaw a significant restoration, earning an award from Gentofte Municipality in 1994. Belvedere changed hands again in 2011. Christian Frigast, Managing Partner of Axcel, became its new owner. The house, with its wide siding, central projection, and first-floor veranda, stands as a testament to its rich history. Belvedere whispers tales of emancipation, financial success, and architectural transformation.
