Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom

The nation’s leaders gathered at this very spot, within the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom’s sacred walls, to crown their new king, Charles Robert. The Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom, also known as the Church of the English Ladies, stands as a testament to centuries of Hungarian history. Its story begins much earlier than the coronation, around 1230 when the Dominicans established a monastery and church here. Tragedy struck in 1541 when the invading Ottoman forces destroyed the original structure. The Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom you see today rose from the ashes between 1700 and 1765, rebuilt in the elegant Baroque style. The church passed from the Dominicans to the Pauline order, then finally to the Institute of the English Ladies in 1787. Disaster struck again in 1838. The Great Flood inundated Budapest, and the Danube’s waters rose two meters high within the Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom. Remarkably, the church’s precious furnishings were saved. The Belvárosi Szent Mihály-templom also played a crucial role in safeguarding a national treasure. After World War II, the Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen, a revered relic, was returned to Hungary and kept safe within these very walls until 1950.
