Bellahøj Skole is a public school located in Brønshøj, Copenhagen. It’s nestled near Degnemosen and Bellahøjhusene, just a stone’s throw from Frederikssundsvej. In 2007, Bellahøj Skole achieved a groundbreaking milestone, becoming Denmark’s very first public sports school. This isn’t just a school with a sports program. It’s a school built on the principle that physical activity is crucial for a child’s overall development. Every class at Bellahøj Skole has five sports lessons per week. The school even offers a specialized sports track for students in 7th through 9th grade. Imagine the energy here, the cheers echoing across the fields. Bellahøj Skole has been educating young minds for generations. The school was originally inaugurated in 1937. During World War II, in March 1945, it was seized by German occupying forces to house refugees. From May 1945, it served as a hospital for German patients with infectious diseases. The students weren’t able to return to their classrooms until November 6, 1945. The school underwent a significant renovation and expansion in 1999. This paved the way for its transformation into the nation’s first sports school in 2007. The idea was simple yet revolutionary: integrate motion, joy of movement, play, health, and social interaction into every facet of school life. Think of it – a school where learning and movement go hand in hand. Bellahøj Skole isn’t just a place of education, it’s a cornerstone of this community. It has over 800 students. The school has been led by Lise Velin since 2015. She followed Jorgen Rosenkrantz-Theil, who was headmaster from 2006 to 2015. Even now, Bellahøj Skole continues to evolve. In 2018, another round of renovations began, including a new building featuring a new sports hall, common areas, rehabilitation facilities, and additional classrooms. The outdoor areas have been thoughtfully designed to encourage even more physical activity, with a new athletics area and playing fields. The vision extends beyond the school walls. The outdoor facilities are intended to be open to the surrounding residential areas, inviting the entire community to share in the benefits. Bellahøj Skole is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub of learning, activity, and community spirit.
