In 1961 four men had a vision. Dr. S. Lewis Johnson, Harold Mims, Howard Prier and James Deen met weekly. They wanted to plant a new church in Dallas. Their main focus was theological doctrine. They agreed on the practices of the church. These prayerful conclusions shaped Believers Chapel.
The church started meeting in the Spring of 1962. They met in the auditorium of Betty Hoffman School. This was a small private school in Dallas. The congregation had about 25 people. By 1969, Believers Chapel moved to its current location at 6420 Churchill Way. This was to accommodate the growing number of members.
Dr. Johnson was esteemed as a biblical scholar and theologian. He served as the primary teacher for over 30 years. His sermons explored the Word of God. You can still access his messages today. The SLJ Institute has about 1,500 of Dr. Johnson’s messages. These are compiled from the 1960s through the 1990s.
In 1993, Dr. Johnson stepped down. Dan Duncan, a former student, became the primary teaching elder. He continues in this role today. Believers Chapel has proclaimed the Gospel throughout Dallas, the United States, and the world for over 50 years. The church has seen the Lord meet its every need.
Believers Chapel is committed to the Historical Evangelical Christian Faith. They believe in Sovereign Grace and Premillennialism. They believe the Bible changes individuals. Sanctification comes through the Bible. Transformation comes through fellowship with Jesus Christ in the Scriptures.
Membership is open to all. Anyone who confesses faith in Jesus Christ can join. They must acknowledge the authority of the Bible. They should attend church regularly. They must submit to the governance of the elders. Members identify themselves by baptism. They show love for other Christians.
Believers Chapel has elders, deacons, and teachers. Elders include Mike Amis, Sten Andersson, and Mark Brunger. Deacons include Harold Albertson, Steve Blodgett and Josh Casey. Teachers lead various classes. These range from adult classes to classes for young children.
Believers Chapel observes the Lord’s Supper weekly. It is a symbol of participation in the Body of Christ. They depend on the Lord for financial provision. The church seeks to glorify Jesus Christ. It does so through preaching the Word. It also observes baptism.
