Recall the year 1521. It was the year Suleiman the Magnificent conquered Belgrade. Today we stand before the Belgradkapı Camii. It is a testament to a significant chapter in Istanbul’s history.

Belgradkapı Camii stands in the Kazlıçeşme neighborhood of Zeytinburnu. It faces the historic Belgradkapı, one of the city’s ancient gates. The mosque’s name echoes the resettlement of Belgraders in this area.

Ayfer Mertler designed this beautiful mosque. Its architecture reflects a modern sensibility. The Belgradkapı Camii features a blend of traditional and contemporary elements. Notice the turquoise and blue tiles that adorn its interior and exterior. They create a calming and visually appealing atmosphere.

The Belgradkapı Camii has a basement, ground floor, and gallery. The basement houses storage and restrooms. The ground floor includes the main prayer area. A section for latecomers completes the space. The design cleverly utilizes the available area.

Step inside the Belgradkapı Camii. The last congregation area spans 42 square meters. Four columns support Bursa arches creating an elegant entrance. The main hall is octagonal. It covers 166 square meters. Approximately 230 people can worship here. Six windows illuminate the hall. Above them, six round gallery windows add to the light.

Admire the marble mihrab, minbar, and kürsü. They are proportional to the mosque’s size. The gallery provides space for about 48 worshippers. It covers 35 square meters.

Belgradkapı Camii connects us to a rich history. It reminds us of the cultural exchanges. These exchanges shaped Istanbul. It stands as a symbol of faith and architectural beauty. This mosque is a reminder of Istanbul’s layered past. It shows how different cultures have enriched the city.
