Born from the ingenuity of Belford Roxo this city breathes history. Its very name whispers of a past shaped by ingenuity and resilience. Engineer Raimundo Teixeira Belfort Roxo a giant of his time solved Rio de Janeiro’s 1889 water crisis. He and Paulo de Frontin orchestrated a miracle transporting millions of liters of water in just six days. This remarkable feat led to the naming of this city.

Belford Roxo wasn’t always a city. It began as a Santo Antonio Jacutinga sugar mill. Imagine the bustling activity the rhythmic clang of machinery. Over centuries the mill changed hands. It was divided and subdivided its lands becoming new ingenuities. The Sarapuí River shaped its destiny. A port thrived on its banks trading sugar rice beans corn and brandy. The river’s waters though once vital are now sadly polluted.

The land passed through various owners. Father Miguel Arcanjo Leitão once held the estate. Later the first Viscount of Barbacena Felisberto Caldeira Brant acquired it. His son Peter Brant the Comte de Iguaçu inherited the land. Eventually the Brant family sold it to Commander Manuel José Coelho da Rocha.

By the late 1800s epidemics plagued the estate. The arrival of the Rio d’Ouro railway in 1872 marked a turning point. This railway built to transport water originally also brought a change in fortunes for Belford Roxo.

Today Belford Roxo is the seventh most populous city in Rio de Janeiro state. It boasts a tropical climate. Its average temperature hovers around 26 degrees Celsius. The city’s landscape is gently rugged with hills dotted across the municipality. The north features the Alto Iguaçu Environmental Protection Area home to forests and preserved vegetation.

Despite its size Belford Roxo struggles with social and economic inequality. Its per capita income is relatively low. The Human Development Index while considered average by some standards falls below the state and national averages. This disparity reflects a history of regional inequality and neglect.

Yet Belford Roxo endures. The Lambs of Belford Roxo a famous samba school parades annually in Rio’s Carnival bringing joy and vibrant energy to the city. The city’s spirit of resilience continues to shine. Its story is one of transformation growth and the enduring legacy of its namesake.
