How did Beirut River become a concrete canal? The Beirut River a vital artery through the heart of Lebanon’s capital has a history as rich and layered as the city itself. From its source high in the mountains to its mouth at the Mediterranean Sea this river has witnessed centuries of change. Once two islands existed in its delta. Over time the river silted up connecting them into one landmass. This ancient waterway known as Magoras in antiquity was a site of worship for the god of Heliopolis. The Romans recognizing its value built an aqueduct and a 240-meter bridge to bring water to Beirut. Fakhreddine Lebanon’s Renaissance prince is believed to have built or repaired a bridge of seven arches across the river.
The Industrial Age brought a transformation. The riverbanks once marshy lands that flooded annually became home to warehouses and shipping services. The river’s proximity to the port made it an ideal location. By the mid-1800s Beirut’s growth extended to within 10 kilometers of the river. The river still provided water via the ancient Roman aqueduct.
But progress came at a cost. Urban sprawl and industrial waste polluted the river. Sewage and refuse from the Karantina slaughterhouse further exacerbated the problem. Environmentalists raised alarms about this pollution and illegal dumping. The river’s 20 kilometer valley was once a crucial bird migration area. It housed birds of 33 different species. Sadly unchecked development water pollution and hunting threatened this unique ecosystem.
In 1968 the river underwent a significant change. It was transformed from a natural riparian river into a concrete canal within Beirut’s urban area. This drastic alteration aimed to mitigate flooding a recurring problem particularly in Bourj Hammoud. Flood control projects continued. In 1970 extensive work protected Bourj Hammoud. In 1974 engineers designed a flood control system for a 32-meter wide channel. Despite these efforts storms in 2005 caused substantial flood damage. A bridge near the port even collapsed under the water pressure.
However hope remains for the Beirut River. Numerous plans for rehabilitation exist. These plans envision turning the river into a sustainable green public space. They dream of creating an environmentally friendly transportation system and water reserve. In 2009 Sandra Frem proposed a restoration plan. In 2010 Phillipe Skaff proposed a ten-year plan to create parks reserves bike paths and more. Others proposed using the river for thermal baths and even a high-speed electric train.
While the government hasn’t acted on these proposals initiatives like theOtherDada’s Beirut RiverLESS Forest project offer a glimmer of hope. This project planted Lebanon’s first native urban forest. It aimed to restore the forest ecosystem along the river. The project uses the Miyawaki Technique a Japanese method for creating dense forests that capture pollution and CO2. This initiative won awards and showcases the potential for regeneration. The Beirut River despite its current state holds the promise of a revitalized future a future where nature and urban life can coexist harmoniously.
