Since its opening in 2009 the Beirut Art Center has played a crucial role. It facilitates the creation and realization of art projects. It encourages interactions between cultural initiatives. Despite straining conditions the Beirut Art Center continues to conceive its programs. It focuses on social structural and material conditions. The Beirut Art Center brings people together. It expands our capacity to think and create. It encourages disengagement from the spectacle of everyday life. The program turns limitations into generative prompts. These prompts revisit what art is. They explore who it speaks to. They examine what art can allow us to do sense and imagine.
The center’s evolving program is guided by our senses. It is guided by language and its inadequacy. It is guided by the relationship to our environment. It considers each other and our possible futures. The program includes exhibitions and learning initiatives. These initiatives are designed for various ages and abilities. The center also hosts cinema and music events. It involves different communities.
The Beirut Art Center Association project was established in 2005. Sandra Dagher and Lamia Joreige initiated it. Founding members included Sandra Dagher Lamia Joreige Rabih Mroué Bassam Kawahji and Maria Ousseimi.
From 2009 to 2014 Lamia Joreige and Sandra Dagher were co-directors. Marie Muracciole served as director from 2014 to 2019. Rana Nasser Eddin was the administrative director from 2019 to 2022. Haig Aivazian and Ahmad Ghossein were artistic co-directors from 2020 to 2022. Reem Shadid was appointed director in January 2023. Ibrahim Nehme is the current director since 2024.
The Beirut Art Center opened in Jisr el Wati. This is an industrial area on the banks of the Beirut River. Architect Raed Abillama refurbished a factory. It became a white cube space. In 2019 the Beirut Art Center moved to a new location. It now occupies two floors in a warehouse building.
