Ensuring successful harvests was once the emperor’s job. We are standing in front of the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum. It is China’s first museum dedicated to ancient architectural history. It is an amazing place.
The Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum opened to the public on September 25 1991. It is located within the Xiannongtan Temple complex. This Temple of Agriculture dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It was built in 1420.
Ming and Qing emperors visited the temple annually. They performed elaborate rituals. These rituals were to guarantee a bountiful harvest. The emperors even did a bit of ploughing. It was literally four pushes of a plough. After that they retired for a ritual banquet.
The museum is not that busy. It is a strong recommendation for visitors to Beijing. It is great for anyone interested in Ming Dynasty temple architecture.
The Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum has five exhibits. The first is the Development Course of Chinese Ancient Architecture. It offers a quick overview of architectural styles. These styles span millennia of Chinese history. It starts with palaeolithic man. Then it moves through China’s dynasties. The hall is large and attractive. It gives a glimpse at how architecture changed over time.
The second hall is across the courtyard. This is the Construction Artistry of Ancient Chinese Architecture. This hall displays how buildings were developed. It shows how ornate wooden elements are held together.
The third section is small. It is called Taisui Altar – Recovery Exhibition of Altar of Taisui. The altar itself is in the next courtyard. It is also part of the Temple of Agriculture’s kitchen area. It is an altar with model pigs in front of it.
The fourth section is City Constructed by Craftsmen. It features a 1:1000 model of Beijing. It shows how city layouts developed. This development was based on spiritual concepts. It also depended on governmental necessities and trading patterns.
The fifth exhibition is Architectural Types of Ancient Chinese Buildings for Appreciation. It displays photos of buildings from across China. These are divided into homes and gardens. There are also tombs and pavilions.
There is also a temporary exhibition space. It may feature more photos of buildings. There may be a slight theme.
The whole complex is the Temple of Agriculture. It includes altars and buildings. These buildings are for ceremonies. Some are for the Emperor to change in. Others are for burning silk offerings. Some prepared sacrifices. The Ancient Architecture Museum is within the largest buildings.
Oddly, there isn’t a souvenir shop at the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum. There is a small stand with generic souvenirs. There is nothing about ancient architecture. This seems like a missed opportunity.
The Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum is a hidden gem. It is cheap and easy to find. It is interesting for a visit of two to three hours. It is also very photogenic. It is not usually busy. The location is convenient. The history is fascinating. It is a very under-visited site. The museum offers a deep dive into China’s architectural past. The museum is an excellent place to reflect. It offers a serene escape.
