Have you ever wondered about the lives of the people who shaped Dallas, Texas? Right here, standing before us, is a monument to one such family – the Beemans. This plaque commemorates the Beeman Memorial Cemetery, a family burial ground established in the mid-1800s.

John Beeman, arriving in Texas during its days as a Republic, along with his wife, Emily Hunnicutt Beeman, purchased 640 acres of land in 1842. They set aside a special portion of this land for their family’s final resting place. The cemetery holds more than 100 graves, with the first known burial taking place in 1845. It was the burial of Holland Coffee Bryan, the infant son of their daughter, Margaret, and her husband, John Neely Bryan, one of the founders of Dallas.

Imagine the scene back then – a simple piece of land, chosen for its beauty, a place to remember loved ones. Over time, generations of Beemans, their neighbors, and their friends were laid to rest here, all sharing a bond with the land and the city they called home. John and Emily Beeman themselves are buried here, alongside their immediate family. The Beeman family is a complex tapestry of lives intertwined. John, Emily, their children, and their intermarriages with families like the Lagows, the Harters, and the Merrifields weave together a captivating story of pioneer life in early Dallas.

In 1976, the Dallas Park Department assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the cemetery. The Beeman descendants continue to contribute financially to ensure the perpetual upkeep and honor of their family’s resting place. Today, the Beeman Memorial Cemetery is a testament to a family’s enduring legacy, marked with a Texas Historical Marker that reminds us of the individuals who helped establish the city we know today.
