Twenty-nine souls. That’s how it began. Twenty-nine people with a shared vision. A vision of bringing the word of God to Bedok. This is Bedok Lutheran Church. Before this building stood tall. Before the hymns echoed through the air. There was only a dream. A dream fueled by faith and a desire to serve.

In June 1977 the Lutheran Church in Malaysia and Singapore took the first step. They appointed a committee. Their task? To plan and discuss starting a congregation in Bedok. The dream was taking shape.

Pastor and Mrs John T Nelson answered the call. They arrived in Singapore in July 1978. Assigned by the Lutheran Church to this new mission they began their work. Their commitment laid the foundation for Bedok Lutheran Church.

On November 1st 1978 they rented a space. No 1 Jalan Tanjong became the church’s humble beginning. A week later the first service was held. Twenty-five worshippers gathered. David Wang led them in thanks. Pastor Nelson delivered the sermon. It was a momentous occasion. The seed of faith had been planted.

The church continued to grow. By May 1979 the first church council was elected. Their leadership guided the congregation through the next phase. In August 1979 the HDB accepted a tender. A new church would be built.

May 1st 1980 marked another milestone. A service blessed the site. Ground was broken for the new building. It was a moment of celebration and anticipation.

September 1981 brought the first service in the new building. The walls echoed with the voices of the faithful. Their prayers filled the new space with hope. Bishop Peter Foong dedicated the building on October 31st 1981. The dream had become a reality.

Bedok Lutheran Church stands as a testament. A testament to faith. A testament to the dedication of those twenty-nine pioneers. Their legacy lives on. This church is a place of worship and a symbol of community. It is a place where people come together. They come together to celebrate their faith and to support each other. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living embodiment of a dream that began with twenty-nine souls. It’s a story of hope and faith. A story that continues to unfold.
