Once upon a time Bedfont Lakes South Side was Fawn’s Manor Farm. It belonged to the Duke of St Albans. Then in 1780 William Sherborn bought it. For years the land produced food for London. Gravel extraction began in the 1860s. This continued until the 1950s. Bedfont Lakes South Side then became a landfill. This lasted until 1973. Polluted lakes and rubbish remained. In 1988 The Rutland Group stepped in. They worked with Hounslow Council. They transformed the area into a country park. This was a condition for building nearby. Rutland managed the park for three years. Then they donated it to the people of South West London. An endowment fund was created to maintain it. In 2000 Bedfont Lakes became a nature reserve. It won many awards. The park now has lakes wetlands meadows and woodland. Over 350 plant species thrive there. There are also many birds moths fungi and mammals. Car parks are in Bedfont Road and Clockhouse Lane. Bedfont Lakes South Side’s transformation is a remarkable story. It shows how a polluted site can become a beautiful nature reserve.
