Founded in 1933, Beccehamian Rugby Football Club stands as a testament to enduring camaraderie. It started with former pupils of Beckenham Grammar School for boys. Originally known as Old Beccehamian Rugby Football Club, its early membership was exclusive. Only former pupils could join.
However, times changed. After the Second World War, the club expanded. It began fielding more teams and welcoming new members. Initially, those who hadn’t attended the school couldn’t play for the first XV. But by 1960, all members were eligible.
The club has strong ties to Langley Park Boys School. The school’s headmaster is even the club’s Vice President. This bond highlights the club’s ongoing connection to its roots.
For years, a permanent ground and clubhouse eluded them. Members gathered in local pubs. The West Wickham Home Guard Club was a favorite spot for post-game celebrations. Finally, in 1960, the RFU and Middlesex County RFU provided financial support. This allowed the club to build its first clubhouse and bar in West Wickham. The games were played down the hill at Sparrow’s Den.
In 1972, an innovative proposal emerged. Beccehamian RFC offered to fund a new clubhouse and changing facilities at Sparrow’s Den. In return, the London Borough of Bromley would fund new soccer changing rooms. The deal was struck. The current clubhouse opened in 1973.
By the 1980s, Beccehamian RFC thrived. They fielded six senior teams. They achieved considerable success, especially in Sevens. Twice, they reached the finals of the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham. The introduction of Leagues in the 1990s led to consolidation. Only four senior teams remained.
The club embraced inclusivity in 1999. Beccehamian RFC formed a Ladies team. They became League Champions in 2014/15. Several players progressed to Ladies Premiership rugby. Robbie Broadhurst was recognized for his contribution. He was awarded “Women’s Rugby Volunteer of the Year 2017” by Kent Rugby.
In recent years, the club has celebrated significant milestones. The 1st XV secured back-to-back promotions. This placed them in their highest ever league status. As of the 2024/25 season, the 1st XV plays in Counties 1 Kent league. The 2nd XV competes in Kent Counties 5 league.
Beccehamian RFC takes pride in its youth development. In 1967, Dennis Oakley initiated mini and youth rugby. It was the first Mini section in Kent. Beccehamian now has 350 members in the Mini and Junior sections. They also have thriving Ladies and Girls teams.
The club’s commitment to youth is clear. Beccehamian RFC is now an open club. It welcomes members from Langley Park and other local schools. The club fosters a family-oriented environment. Three brothers once started in the 1st XV. The club even holds an annual family game against Westcombe Park.
Beccehamian RFC stands as a vibrant community hub. It’s a place where rugby, history, and family intertwine. It is a club that honors its past while eagerly embracing the future.
