Did the sultans ever stroll through this very spot? We’re standing in Bebek Parkı, a tranquil oasis nestled along the bustling Bosphorus in Istanbul’s Bebek neighborhood. Bebek Parkı wasn’t always a public space. In the 18th century, this verdant expanse served as the gardens for the opulent Hümayunabad Palace. Imagine elegantly dressed Ottoman nobles wandering amidst the fragrant flowers and manicured lawns. It wasn’t until 1908, after the declaration of the Second Constitutional Era, that the area was opened to the public, becoming the Bebek Parkı we know today. Over the years, Bebek Parkı has seen its share of transformations. A gazino replaced the Hümayunabad Palace during the Republican era. Later, under Mayor Bedrettin Dalan, the area was further developed, even featuring a statue of the renowned poet Fuzuli. Fast forward to 2008, Bebek Parkı underwent a major renovation thanks to the Sabancı Foundation, even changing its name to Türkan Sabancı Bebek Parkı. The Italian architect Ermanno Casasco and his team reimagined the park, creating the beautiful space we see today. Bebek Parkı boasts a variety of features. The park spans a total area of 16,000 square meters, with 8,800 square meters dedicated to green spaces. Imagine a leisurely stroll along its 5,500 square meters of walking paths. Children can enjoy the dedicated 1,000 square meter playground. Even our furry friends are catered for, with a designated 820 square meter dog walking area. As you relax amidst the greenery, enjoying the stunning Bosphorus views, remember the layers of history woven into the very fabric of Bebek Parkı. From a sultan’s private garden to a public park, this place has always been a haven for those seeking tranquility amidst the vibrant city.
