Let’s step back in time, to the year 1945, and into the heart of Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood. This is where Beautiful Zion Missionary Baptist Church held its first service. The church was founded by 16 brave souls, brought together by the late Reverend L.W. White, who had a vision for a community center rooted in faith. The church was named after the beautiful Mother Lula Hawkins, a woman revered for her dedication to the community.
The early days were filled with challenges. The church moved around quite a bit, holding services in borrowed spaces. The 16 founding members never faltered in their resolve, eventually purchasing a building at 2830 South Cottage Grove, that they converted into a small church. The journey was a testament to their unwavering spirit and dedication to building a strong foundation for their community. Their hard work and faith in God were rewarded when they moved into a larger building at 6201 South Morgan in 1954, and then again when they finally found their current home on 1406 W. 64th Street in 1965.
Beautiful Zion Missionary Baptist Church has stood witness to the ebb and flow of life, its story intricately woven with the fabric of Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood. The church has provided a beacon of hope and a haven of faith for countless individuals. Over the years, the church has grown, offering a range of programs to support the community, from food and clothing drives to outreach programs. Today, Beautiful Zion Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission, guided by the tenets of faith, love, and service.
