Picture this. You stand before Beaconsfield Upper. A quaint village nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. Its story unfolds before you.

Beaconsfield Upper. A name echoing with history. It began not with grand plans but with humble beginnings. Gold prospectors arrived in the 1870s. They sought fortune in Haunted Gully. William Brisbane a shrewd early pioneer saw opportunity. He established a guesthouse. He named it Beaconsfield House. A nod to the then British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli Lord Beaconsfield. This guesthouse became the heart of the early settlement.

The arrival of the Melbourne to Sale Railway line in 1879 was pivotal. A platform was built near Cardinia Creek. It was named Beaconsfield. The post office initially called Beaconsfield was renamed Beaconsfield Upper in 1891 to distinguish it from the railway station.

Early settlers were a mix of small mixed farmers and Melbournites seeking weekend retreats. By 1912 a thriving community existed. There was a school a hall a general store and six guesthouses. The Pinegrove Hotel added to the lively atmosphere. The area’s reputation for clean air and scenic beauty drew visitors. Horse-drawn carriages carried them up to Beaconsfield House from the train station.

Tragedy struck in February 1983. The Ash Wednesday fires swept through. Many houses were destroyed. Lives were lost. A memorial stands today to remember those who perished. The town rebuilt stronger and more resilient than ever.

Today Beaconsfield Upper boasts a community centre a recreation reserve for sports. There’s a pony and riding club a tennis club and numerous parks and reserves. Golfers enjoy the Beaconhills Country Club. Kindergartens a primary school St John’s Anglican church and a nursing home serve the community. A mobile library visits weekly.

Beaconsfield Upper is more than a place. It’s a testament to human spirit resilience and the enduring beauty of the Australian landscape. It’s a story of gold rush dreams farming families and a community bound by shared experiences. A community that continues to thrive in the shadow of the Dandenongs. A community that welcomes you.
