Beneath the Beach Road Bridge, secrets slumber. This unassuming overpass, a concrete sentinel straddling the bustling motorway, holds a story richer than its plain facade suggests. Beach Road Bridge isn’t just a crossing; it’s a testament to time, a silent observer of Auckland’s evolution. The Beach Road Bridge, built over 50 years ago, began to show its age. The concrete, once a sturdy shield, was cracking. The minimal covering over the steel reinforcing was a growing concern, threatened by the relentless Auckland weather. A simple bitumen emulsion and asphalt layer offered little protection against the elements. The bridge was vulnerable. In 2017, the New Zealand Transport Agency, along with Fulton Hogan and Polymer Group Ltd, embarked on a mission to revitalize this aging giant. The goal was simple: protect the Beach Road Bridge from further decay and ensure its continued service for decades to come. The solution was a sophisticated waterproofing system. The existing road surface was carefully milled away, revealing the bare concrete deck beneath. The concrete was then meticulously prepared. It was fine-milled using a bobcat, then diamond ground and captive shot blasted. This painstaking process ensured the removal of every last trace of bitumen. The bridge deck, now a clean slate, was ready for its transformation. A primer was applied, followed by two coats of Stirling Lloyd Eliminator waterproofing membrane. A vibrant yellow, the first coat created a striking visual against the grey concrete. After a short setting time, the second coat, a contrasting white, completed the protective barrier. Finally, a bond coat was applied, preparing the deck for the return of the asphalt wear layer. Beach Road Bridge was reborn, its concrete shell fortified against the elements. This vital artery, now rejuvenated, continues to pulse with the lifeblood of Auckland, carrying countless vehicles across its span every day.
