From roller skates to rock ‘n’ roll, the BBC Maida Vale Studios has a story to tell. Right here, in Delaware Road, stands a building that has echoed with the sounds of music history. The BBC Maida Vale Studios, originally the Maida Vale Roller Skating Palace and Club, opened its doors in 1909. Imagine a space designed for over 2,650 skaters, complete with its own orchestra balcony. The Skating Palace met a swift end, but the building found new life in the 1930s. It became home to the BBC Symphony Orchestra and even served as a standby news center during World War II. After suffering a direct hit during the Blitz, the BBC Maida Vale Studios underwent renovations and emerged stronger than ever. This complex boasts seven studios, five of which are still in active use today. Studio MV1, the largest, can hold an orchestra of over 150 musicians and an audience of over 200. The BBC Maida Vale Studios became a musical hub. It hosted the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, known for its creation of the Doctor Who theme. Studio MV4 became synonymous with the legendary John Peel Sessions, where countless artists, from David Bowie to Led Zeppelin, recorded iconic tracks. From 1967 to 2004, the BBC Maida Vale Studios was the heart of the Peel Sessions. The last band to record there under Peel’s tenure was Skimmer in October 2004. Even the Beatles graced these studios, recording sessions for BBC Radio in 1963. The BBC Maida Vale Studios has captured countless performances across genres, from classical masterpieces to groundbreaking rock and pop. But the story doesn’t end here. In 2018, the BBC announced the closure of the studios, with plans to move to a new facility in Stratford. Yet, the legacy of BBC Maida Vale Studios lives on. In 2020, it was designated a Grade II Listed Building, ensuring its preservation. The building was sold in 2023 to a partnership including Hans Zimmer, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner, marking a new chapter for this iconic space. The BBC Maida Vale Studios stands as a testament to the power of music, a place where history has been recorded, note by note.
