Whispers of cholera once haunted Bayrampaşa. This district of Istanbul bears a name echoing a 17th-century Ottoman grand vizier, Bayram Pasha. But before 1970, it was known as Sağmalcılar. Bayrampaşa’s story is one of transformation, resilience, and a touch of irony. A cholera outbreak, stemming from polluted water supplies, forced a quarantine. The name Sağmalcılar became synonymous with disease. So, Bayrampaşa was born, ironically named after a man whose era predated modern sanitation. Bayrampaşa stands as a testament to Istanbul’s constant evolution. It’s a blend of working-class homes and industrial zones. This district pulses with a population exceeding 275,000. Its compact 9 square kilometers house Istanbul’s largest prison, now decommissioned. Two large sports complexes provide recreational opportunities. And the main bus station, though named Esenler, actually resides within Bayrampaşa. This district also holds a quirky claim to fame. Bayrampaşa was once renowned for its artichokes. Although production has ceased, a variety of artichoke still bears the district’s name. A large artichoke statue, a symbol of its agricultural past, stands proudly in the district center. Bayrampaşa is a crossroads of old and new, a district etched with the scars of a health crisis and the pride of a vibrant community. The echoes of cholera may be gone, but the story of Bayrampaşa continues to unfold.
