Welcome to Bayles! Now, close your eyes and imagine a small town in rural Victoria. You are on the Koo Wee Rup-Longwarry Road. The air is fresh with the smell of farming. It’s a sleepy little place with a population of just over 400 people. And they are all proud of their heritage. Now let’s go back to the early 1900s. You see, this spot was once part of a big swamp. Then in 1919, the land was sold for the first time. And they built a train station. But that isn’t the story. No. The story starts in a small building on the edge of town. It’s a quaint wooden building with a red corrugated roof. The Bayles Butter Factory. And they made butter! People came from miles around to buy fresh, creamy butter. They used the train to transport it to Melbourne. This was exciting. People had something to be proud of. So, we can thank a brave soldier, Frederick Bayles, for the name of this place. He was the first Victorian Railway Construction Branch member to be killed in World War I. They named the town after him. Sadly, though, things changed in the 1970s. The dairy industry started to decline. Then came the closure of the factory in 1979. A few years later, they replaced the factory with a park. Today, it’s a haven for wildlife. The Bayles Fauna Park is a local favorite. You can see kangaroos, emus, and a variety of other animals. And if you look past the park you notice another piece of history: the Longwarry Road bridge. It spans the Yallock Creek. The locals are very fond of the bridge as they are very proud of its unusual construction. It’s a testament to the craftsmanship from the past. I tell you, Bayles is a charming town with a rich history! It’s a place worth discovering. And it’s a perfect example of how small-town life has changed over the decades.
