Have you ever heard of a town born from a runaway parakeet? That’s the whimsical origin story of Bayan Baru, a key part of the larger Bayan Lepas area here on Penang Island. Bayan Lepas, meaning “the parakeet has flown away,” sprung to life in the late 19th century when a wealthy Sumatran family landed on these shores. Amidst the flurry of disembarking, their pet parakeet made a daring escape. This feathered fugitive inadvertently christened the area. This incident became the basis for the name of the place, Bayan Lepas. Bayan Baru emerged later, in the mid-1970s, as a planned township within Bayan Lepas. It quickly blossomed into a major suburb of the expanding Penang metropolitan area. It’s a testament to smart urban planning, transforming from rice paddies to a bustling hub. While Bayan Lepas was once known as the “rice bowl” of Penang, Bayan Baru represents a shift towards a more modern, diverse economy.
