The anticipation built until December 2022, when the announcement came: Bay City Park would be the training ground for the United States women’s national team. The park underwent a transformation to meet international standards. Upgrades were made to the lower fields, and the changing rooms were expanded and equipped with heating. A temporary gym and operations complex were also erected, ensuring the team had everything they needed to prepare for the tournament. Even an unofficial friendly match between the United States and the Philippines took place on July 14, 2023, adding another layer of prestige to Bay City Park’s history. But Bay City Park’s story isn’t just about international acclaim. It’s also a place where local talent shines. On August 12, 2023, under the glow of newly installed lights, Bay City Park hosted its first-ever night game. East Coast Bays triumphed over Onehunga Mangere United 4-1, etching a memorable victory into the park’s narrative. Bay City Park also holds a special place in New Zealand’s football history. In 2015, it hosted an international friendly match between the New Zealand U-20s and Austria U-20s. This match, a prelude to the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup held in New Zealand, attracted a crowd of 500 spectators, showcasing Bay City Park’s ability to host significant sporting events.
