Wonder why this place radiates such peace? This is Bawa Jahangeer Shah. Let me tell you his story.

Hazrat Peer Syed Jahangeer Shah, a Sufi Saint from India, once lived right here in Port Louis. He stayed on Torren Street. Bawa Jahangeer Shah was the nephew of Peer Jamal Shah. Peer Jamal Shah is buried in the Jummah Mosque compound here in Port Louis.

Bawa Jahangeer Shah’s earthly journey ended on January 20 1890. That was the 25th of Jamad-Ul-Awwal. His son and daughter returned to India after his death. Then, a dream changed everything.

They both dreamt that their father wanted a Shrine built over his grave in Mauritius. He wanted it built with his own money. So, in 1898, they opened his tomb. It is said they found his body unchanged. That’s when they authorized the construction of the Dargah. It was built that same year.

Bawa Jahangeer Shah’s father was Peer Sayyed Mahmud Shah Chishty. His mother was Bibi Sayeda Shehar Bano. His maternal uncle was Peer Sayyed Haider Shah Al-Jilani. He was known as “Siyah Posh Bawa”.

People visit the Dargah Shareef of Peer Jahangeer Shah every day. The Mosque of Terre Rouge is named after him. It stands on Royal Road, Terre Rouge.

The death anniversary of Bawa Jahangeer Shah is commemorated with an Urs ceremony. Many Muslim brothers gather to recite Naat Shareef. It’s a moving tribute to his memory.

Interestingly, some say that the name of Allah appeared in the sky. This happened above the Majar Sharif of Peer Jahangeer Shah when a photo was taken.

Also, the watchman of the Majar Sharif, Bye Ally, served for 47 years. He claimed to have seen Peer Jahangeer Shah walking with a torch lamp at night. People say Bawa Jahangeer Shah would go to the Mosque for Namaz.

Hazrath Peer Sayed Jahangeer Shah is also the nephew of Hazrath Peer Sayed Jamal Shah. His Mazaar is in the Jumma Musjid here in Port Louis. Hazrath Peer Sayed Jahangeer Shah is also the nephew of HAZRATH PEER SAYED HYDER ALI SHAH AL QADRI. His mazaar is in Bangalore.

So, remember Bawa Jahangeer Shah. He was a Sufi Saint. His legacy of faith and miracles still resonates here today.
