It operates under the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and the Rabindranath Tagore Institute Council. This idyllic setting in Ilot Pamplemousses is a fitting tribute to the great poet philosopher.
The foundation stone was laid on March 12 2000. Two Prime Ministers Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India and Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam of Mauritius officiated the event. This marked the beginning of a project destined to foster intellectual and cultural exchange. The institute initially functioned as a boys’ school. It later embraced co-education.
Mr Mahendra Gungapersad led the institute as its first rector from 2003 to 2014. Mrs K Bhuckory then took the reins. She served two non-consecutive terms. Mr N Joggesser held the position between Mrs Bhuckory’s tenures.
