The Baumwollbörse, built in 1902, became the heart of it all. Inside its grand Neo-Renaissance facade, deals were struck and fortunes made and lost on the turn of the market. The Baumwollbörse even boasts Bremen’s first steel frame, a sign of innovation in its time. Sadly, the Second World War left its mark. Bombing raids damaged the building, claiming its rear section and the elegant steeple-like tower that once graced its front. Today, though its offices have moved to Wachtstraße, the Baumwollbörse continues to hold a significant place in the international cotton market. The “Rules of the Bremen Cotton Exchange” are still consulted for contracts and dispute resolutions.
