The summer of 2019 was brutally hot and dry. Many trees in Bonn withered and died. Instead of discarding the fallen trees, the city repurposed them into this fascinating pyramid. The Baumscheiben-Pyramide is approximately three meters high and three and a half meters wide. It’s constructed from stacked discs of both deciduous and coniferous trees. The tree slices, layered in an overlapping pattern, create a captivating visual. Look closely. You’ll see a network of passages and hollows within the pyramid. These provide shelter, nesting sites, and wintering spots for various animals. The wooden discs themselves become a microhabitat, teeming with insects, fungi, and lichens. Flanking the Baumscheiben-Pyramide are the remnants of two birch trees. These stark, beautiful skeletons also serve as biotope trees. They provide vital habitats for other species. The city monitors these biotope trees regularly to ensure they remain stable. They will only be removed if they pose a safety risk. The Baumscheiben-Pyramide is more than just an art installation.
